The Obsessions Octet, founded in 2005 by jazz saxophonist Kent Sangster and his wife, classically trained violinist Joanna Ciapka-Sangster, creates a distinctive fusion of jazz, classical, and Latin sounds. This Edmonton-based ensemble brings together a jazz quartet and a classical string quartet, blending compositions by icons like Astor Piazzolla, Chucho Valdes, Cole Porter, and Sangster’s own original works, to craft a rich chamber-jazz experience with room for improvisation.
Their four celebrated albums—Obsession (2006), Melodia (2010), Steppin’ Up (2016), and Reverence (2019)—showcase the Octet’s evolving style and have earned them a Western Canadian Music Award, a Juno nomination, and widespread acclaim. The Obsessions Octet continues to be one of North America’s most distinguished crossover ensembles, offering an innovative and unforgettable musical journey.
